Adaptable cover letter example

Dear Mr. Sweeney,

Hard work, team work and innovation. These are three things that come to mind when I think about what it takes to produce successful business results.  Even from a young age, I have been persistent in achieving a standard of excellence, be it through an eagerness to complete additional tasks or a dedication to ensuring top-notch quality for all my schoolwork. It is with this enthusiasm and commitment to excellence that I am applying for the role of intern with Firth Fullman.

After graduating from Saint Patrick Secondary School Dublin with my Leaving Certificate in 2021, I have been working in retail and hospitality for some time now. I am now looking for ways to progress my career in the media and creative arts industry, and Firth Fullman have been a company that I have held in high esteem for a long time. I was really passionate about media and film during my high school years and I have attached my portfolio which showcases my work and previous film projects. I believe that my enthusiasm for media, hardworking attitude and dedication would make me stand out as an ideal candidate for Firth Fullman.

When reviewing the job description, there was many aspects of this potential role that stood out to me. Having managed the social media channels for some of my previous employers, here are some current career achievements that I feel would help me add value in a potential position with Firth Fullman:

  • Grew previous company social media from 200 to 2,500
  • Successfully produced a short-film that won the "Best Youth Award" in the Dublin Media City Competition, showcased to over 10,000 viewers
  • Improved the sales at previous company by 26% after identifying social media trends and developing campaign strategies that capitalised on these trends

I am highly passionate, enthusiastic and hard-working and I would love the opportunity to discuss my career achievements and aspirations with you further. I hope to hear from you soon!

Warm wishes,

Keegan Griffin

The cover letter header

Cover letter headers contain important contact information so employers know how to get in touch with you: no contact information, no contact! For this reason, it’s important that all of your contact details are accurate and up-to-date. Nobody wants to miss out on an internship opportunity because of a typo!

You should include your full name, address, phone number, and email address. Additionally, you may choose to add your LinkedIn profile or portfolio website if it's relevant to the position you're applying for. Looking good!

The cover letter greeting

Cover letter greetings help you establish a connection with potential employers. A good cover meeting can help create a positive first impression with new employers, whereas a bad cover letter greeting can completely destroy your chances of getting noticed by employers. It’s important to start your cover letter off with an appropriate, professional and polite greeting, such as “Dear Mrs. Corr,” or “Dear Mr. McDonald.” If you don’t know the name of your employer, using “Dear Team [Insert Company],” will do!

Dear Mr. Sweeney,

The cover letter introduction

As the old adage goes, first impressions count — and the purpose of your cover letter introduction is to help create a positive first impression with employers! For this reason, your introduction should be attention-grabbing and compelling. How do we achieve this? With an engaging opening! To pique the interest of potential employers, you can open your cover letter with an interesting anecdote, a thought-provoking fact, or by simply elaborating on a relevant achievement. Additionally, you can also briefly explain why you are interested in the specific role and company. The introduction can be a great way to demonstrate your knowledge about the company you’re applying for. Do you and the company you wish to be an intern at have shared values? Let employers know! Overall, your introduction should engage employers’ interests and set the stage for the rest of your cover letter. Take a peek at our introduction example below:

Cover letter body paragraphs

What makes a great cover letter? Impressive, well-written body paragraphs! While it’s important that your entire cover letter is compelling and specifically tailored to what employers are looking for, your body paragraphs contain the most substance of any other paragraph and will help seal the deal for employers, so it’s important to pay extra special attention to this section. Here, you can focus on highlighting any relevant professional expertise, qualifications and experiences that can help you add value to the workplace, as well as any abilities or skills that may assist you in your internship. You can elaborate on any specific projects, coursework, or extracurricular activities that have prepared you for the internship role, however, don’t just regurgitate your CV. Using actionable language, explain how these achievements and experiences make you a suitable candidate.

Here’s our example to help you get started:

Cover letter conclusion

The conclusion of your cover letter is your final opportunity to reiterate your interest in the internship you’re applying for. In a confident tone, you can summarise any key points that reflect the value you have to offer a business or organisation, and indicate that you’re looking forward to connecting with employers soon. It’s not enough to rush through your conclusion with a hopeful attitude: take your time writing a genuine and authentic closing that is an accurate representation of the value you have to offer employers. Finally, conclude with a professional closing – and don’t forget to thank the reader for their time and consideration! Farewells such as “yours sincerely,” “kind regards,” and “best wishes” are all fantastic ways to end your cover letter. When you’re done, you can sign off with your full name, proofread your cover letter and get excited: you’re now ready to start applying for jobs!
