As a coffee aficionado, you possess a wealth of knowledge and skills that enable you to create extraordinary coffee experiences for customers.

Finding the right barista job for you requires making a great first impression on potential employers. To do this, you’ll need a CV layout that is clean, balanced and professional. Here at cvapp.ie, we’re passionate about creating a CV that both impresses and engages. With a wide range of CV templates, career advice and CV guides, we’ve got something for everyone.

In this guide, we’ll review the following:

  • The essential sections of a barista CV
  • How to optimise each section of your CV
  • How to best outline your work experience
  • How to convince potential employers why you’re the best candidate for the role
  • Our top tips for designing a CV layout and format

Let’s begin with how to write an effective barista CV!

Expert tip

Customise your CV to every job role you apply for!

This requires using keywords from the job description. It’s best to use websites such as Wordle to identify these keywords – this can help you bypass applicant tracking systems (ATS) in the process!

How to write a barista CV

Crafting an impressive barista CV can be a challenging task – after all, where do you even start? However, understanding that all CVs follow a similar structure can make the process more manageable. Here are the essential elements to include:

  • Header
  • Summary
  • Employment history section
  • Education section
  • Skills section

Choosing the best CV format for baristas

For baristas, we recommend using the reverse chronological format. Employers prefer this format because it’s easy to review. In this format, the employment history section is organised with brief bullet points that highlight the important details of each position held, starting with the most recent. Most of the CV templates on the cvapp.ie website will follow this format.

However, if you are new to the workforce or going through a career transition, other CV formats may be more suitable. Options like the functional CV or hybrid format focus on highlighting your skills and abilities, rather than specific work experiences.

Include your contact information

All CVs should contain contact information so employers can reach out to you! The following information should be in the header of your CV:

  • Full name
  • Email Address
  • Phone Number
  • Location
  • Relevant websites

When you’re done, it should look like the following:

Do
  • Breandán Doherty
  • Barista
  • (353) 772 73719
  • breandanjdohery@outlook.com
Don't
  • Breandán Doherty
  • Coffee King
  • (353) 772 73719
  • bigbreandan@gmail.com

Barista CV summary: Spice up your CV

As a barista, you’re often the first point of contact for customers. Providing friendly and attentive service is important! In this section, you’ll want to convey your professional personality to potential employers. In just 1-2 sentences, you should showcase your top skills, and highlight your past employment experiences.

You can strengthen your barista CV summary by including specific details about your previous barista positions. You may mention the number of daily customers you served, any unique drink creations you developed, the range of menu items you memorised and more.

Additionally, emphasising your past leadership experiences or advanced training can greatly boost the value of your barista CV, especially if you are targeting managerial or higher-level positions.

Here’s a great example of a CV summary:

Adaptable CV profile example

An adaptive team player with a passion for good coffee and satisfied customers. Committed to using safe and sanitary cooking practices, and maintaining an organised and clean cooking area.

Employment history: Show off your expertise

Your employment history section is an essential part of your barista CV.  Potential employers are looking for candidates who fit their high-standard, customer-focused environment. While experience as a barista is preferred, managers may be open to training candidates with the right personality and customer service skills! It’s best to present your work history starting with the latest role, including two or three relevant examples. If you have enough coffee-related experience, you can omit unrelated jobs.

Be sure to use bullet points to highlight key job achievements, such as customer numbers served, top tip-earning records, menu item development, and hiring and training contributions. Additionally, you can also showcase additional responsibilities like supply management, cleaning, food preparation, and product sourcing.

New to the job? No problem!

If you're new to being a barista, it's important to demonstrate how your previous experiences have prepared you for the role. Highlight qualities like teachability, reliability, and patience, which can be learned in various contexts. For instance, handling picky customers in retail, providing individual attention as a tutor, fostering a friendly ambiance as a receptionist, or preparing food and drinks efficiently in fast food. These examples showcase your transferable skills and readiness for the barista job.

Detail your education & relevant certifications

While formal education is not typically necessary for a barista position since many job duties can be learned on the job, it doesn't mean this section should be left blank. If you hold a degree in hospitality or food service, it directly applies to the role and should be mentioned.

Even if your degree is not in a related field, it can still be beneficial to showcase any educational pursuits or ongoing studies. This is also an opportunity to highlight any additional certifications you have obtained in areas such as coffee, restaurant service, or food safety. For example, an Irish Barista Guild (IBG) certification in brewing techniques or latte art, or a City & Guilds Barista Skills certification could be excellent additions to your education section.

When you’ve completed this section, it should look a little like the following:

  • Graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities (Liberal Arts)

The best skills to include on a barista CV

In the skills section, you have the opportunity to outline both hard skills and soft skills that are essential to your barista role (nobody wants a bad coffee!) Hard skills encompass more technical skills, including skills that are acquired through operating tools, coffee machinery, and various equipment. These may include operating espresso machines, coffee grinders, and brewing equipment. You might also like to include skills such as batch brewing, latte art, or customer service skills!

Soft skills are the personal attributes that contribute to your effectiveness as a barista. These skills often revolve around communication, customer service, leadership, and organisation. Effective communication skills enable you to interact with customers, understand their preferences, and provide pleasant experiences. Organisation skills are vital for efficient multitasking, managing inventory, and maintaining cleanliness in the cafe.

By including both hard and soft skills in this section, you present a well-rounded set of capabilities that demonstrate your suitability for the barista role.
