Formatting the perfect graphic designer cover letter with CVapp.ie!

Graphic designers, you help make the world a more exciting, colourful place! Finding the perfect job can feel like a challenge, especially if you don’t know where to start. Whether you’re looking for cover letter advice and tips for an existing cover letter, or you’re looking to start completely from scratch, our CVapp.ie cover letter guide for graphic designers is here to help you create a job-winning cover letter in no time.

Generally speaking, most cover letters should contain the following elements

  • Cover letter header
  • Cover letter greeting
  • Introduction
  • Cover letter body paragraphs
  • Conclusion

Not sure where to start? No problem! We’ll walk you through each section and help you put your best foot forward. To start creating a genius graphic designer cover letter, we’ll first start with the cover letter header.

Cover letter header

Cover letter headers tend to be the most striking visual element on the page, so it’s essential that your header is formatted right! As a graphic designer, you know the importance of visual presentation: your header helps create a positive first impression with employers, so it’s essential that your cover letter is formatted professionally! We have a ton of header designs and layouts in our CVapp.ie Cover Letter Builder for you to choose from: simply choose a design and input your name and contact information. Pretty easy, right?

You should include your full name, email address and phone nunber in the contact information details, as well as links to any professional network sites such as LinkedIn, and a link to your online portfolio if you have one. All of our CVapp.ie cover letter templates are user-friendly and customisable, so you can adjust the layout and design settings to your preference.

Cover letter greeting

While greetings may seem small or unimportant, the right greeting can create a positive impact on employers just as much as the wrong greeting can completely destroy your chances of landing the job! We recommend using a simple greeting, such as “Dear Mr. Williams,” or “Dear Team Company.” If you know the name of your employers, be sure to use it: employers love personalised greetings!

Dear Mr. O'Connor,

Cover letter introduction

Introductions are important as they help establish a positive first impression with employers. To craft an effective cover letter introduction, it’s important to ensure you have a thorough understanding of what employers are looking for in a candidate. To do this, be sure to read over the job description: what type of graphic design skills are these employers looking for? What software or design tools are you efficient in? Have you been awarded for your graphic design work? What type of clients have you worked with? Use these questions to help you write your introduction. If you need some inspiration, check out our customisable introduction sample below:

One of my most cherished memories growing up was playing video games with my father and brothers. We used to spend hours playing together, shovelling popcorn into our mouthes and laughing as we dodged banana peels and tortoise shells on Mario Kart. Even at that age, I remember thinking how the gaming world had the power to bring joy into the lives of everyday individuals and families. That same magical sensation and unbridled joy still bubbles to the surface when I create programs and content designed to fascinate, educate and captivate an audience. With immense enthusiasm, I am applying for the role of graphic designer at Future X, a company I have long admired and respected in the digital media space. Thank you for your consideration of my application!

Cover letter body paragraphs

Body paragraphs are where the magic happens in your cover letter: it’s the most important section of your cover letter as it provides employers with all the details they need to understand your professional background. What makes you the ideal applicant? What professional strengths, skills, insights, experience or expertise do you have to offer to a new client, organisation or business? How can you use your graphic design skills to drive value to new stakeholders? As you begin to answer these questions in your cover letter, don’t forget to tailor your written content to what employers are looking for. Keep the job description next to you as you write!

Adaptable cover letter body example

In 2017, I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Design and Creative Media from the National University of Ireland, Galway. As a student, I decided to take a minor in interactive media, learning how to create video games and virtual environments; just like the ones I loved as a kid! I am proficient in a range of design software, including Adobe Creative Suite, CoreIDRAW, SketchUp Pro and Blender. I would describe myself as a collaborative and proactive team-player, highly creative, motivated and committed to providing clients with excellent results.

Cover letter conclusion

Finally, your conclusion is your final chance to leave a great impression on employers. Here, you’ll want to reiterate any key points you made in your CV and thank the reader for their time and consideration. Note: the conclusion should be brief, so don’t go overboard! It’s also a great idea to let employers know that you’d love to connect with them soon. You can close your cover letter with a polite, professional sign-off, such as “yours sincerely,” or “kind regards.” Remember, the goal of any cover letter is to make a strong impression upon employers and show how you can add value to the company. If you get stuck, we’ve got a great example of a conclusion below! Read your cover letter over, and when you’re happy with it, go ahead and submit your application: Woo-hoo, you’re ready for the job market!

I have attached a portfolio with previously completed projects and testimonials from happy clients. I hope my commitment to the spirit of creativity is demonstrated in my portfolio and I would love to connect with you at your earliest convenience. I would love to work with a company like Future X. I hope to hear from you soon!

Yours sincerely,

Corey Boyle
